The shadow cast by climate change over everything gives us the feeling that we are entering a new reality. The consequences are overwhelming and call into question our sense of self and our relationship with the world at the most fundamental level.

As artists, we too are challenged to redefine our role in this turning point of the Capitalocene. How can art provide a sensory anchor in this reeling reality? What kind of art do we need to add to reality what is required so that the new can emerge with enthusiasm and invite us to forge a different relationship with the Earth?

For bankleer, art is a means of responding to social, political and environmental events. A recurring theme is the immense formative forces of neoliberalism and the question of art’s social impact. Her interdisciplinary works encompass sculptural performances, objects, environments, video essays, texts, as well as actions and interventions in public spaces. Her works navigate the tension between discursive media and aesthetic expressions of emotions and speculations.
